HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An abandoned lay net caused the death of a young green sea turtle in Windward Oahu.

The DLNR says two divers reported the abandoned 100-foot-long net near Punaluu Beach on Jan. 13.

DOCARE officers recovered it, but during cleanup, they found the heartbreaking discovery of a dead honu, fish and crustaceans trapped inside.

The Hawaii Marine Animal Response team will do further research on the turtle.

Environmental officials want everyone to do their part in protecting ocean wildlife.

Lay net regulation information is available through the DLNR Dept. of Aquatic Resources by clicking here.

Anonymous reporting to DOCARE officers is also available through the DLNRTip app and tip411, as well as by telephone through the statewide hotline at 643-DLNR (3567).
