HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The UFC’s debut fight card on ESPN+ will feature two familiar faces for Hawaii MMA fans.
Makaha’s own Yancy Medeiros is returning to the Octagon after a year away from the cage and will make his return to the lightweight division to take on the undefeated Gregor Gillespie, who is widely considered to be one of the rising stars at 155 pounds.
Also making her return to the cage is Waianae’s Rachael Ostovich, who hasn’t fought since last July when she lost to Montana De La Rosa. Ostovich has also had to deal with personal issues outside of the fight game that nearly took her out of her fight against Paige Vanzant altogether.
The Waianae native was able to overcome injuries suffered from her ongoing domestic abuse case involving her husband, Arnold Berdon, to take on VanZant, who is on the comeback from some lingering injuries of her own.
VanZant underwent multiple arm surgeries over the past 12 months to resolve a broken bone in her arm that didn’t heal correctly. For both fighters, tomorrow’s fight will be a significant boost for both morale and the growth of their respective MMA careers.
Ostovich and VanZant are set to fight in the second fight on the main card, followed by Medeiros and Gillespie two fights later.
Medeiros hasn’t fought since a first round TKO loss to Donald Cerrone at welterweight. He was set to return last July at UFC 223 against Mike Perry before suffering a broken rib.
For Medeiros, a win over Gillespie offers a path back into the Top 15 at 155 pounds while a win for Gillespie legitimizes the hype surrounding him, allowing him to pursue a Top 10 opponent.
