HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fashion designer and former “Project Runway” contestant will be recreating garments worn by Hawaiian royalty.

Over the next two years, Kini Zamora will work on remaking pieces worn by King Kalakaua, Queen Kapiolani and Princess Kaiulani — all of which will eventually be on display at Iolani Palace.

These pieces include King Kalakaua’s Hawaiian Kingdom military uniform and masonic uniform, two of Queen Kapiolani’s dresses and a dress that Princess Kaiulani wore as a child.

One of the gowns that Zamora will design was worn by Queen Kapiolani for her coronation alongside King Kalakaua. Although Zamora will incorporate modern techniques, he is creating it following Victorian design.

This gown is scheduled to go on display on Feb. 12, 2019 to coincide with the 136th anniversary of the coronation.

The garments will join the reproduction gowns currently on display in the palace, which were designed by Iris Viacrusis.
