HONOLULU (KHNL) - The weather was almost perfect last night for the Hokulea. She launched Tuesday, just after 5:00 PM from Sand Island.

Crew members say they had a beautiful night of sailing, with mostly clear skies, and gentle rolling swells.

"It's what we call easing into the ocean, so they were able to get their sea legs and yet go fast enough that they're going to make their target on time," said Mei Jeanne Wagner, spokesperson for Hokulea.

The nearly full moon did obscure some of the stars Captain Bruce Blankenfeld needed to navigate, but the crew says there were plenty of other stars and clues to help stay on course.

Hokulea is on its way to Palmyra Atoll. This is a training voyage, to prepare for a trip around the world.
