Boys state basketball tournament off and running

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The girls went first and now it's time for the boys. On Wednesday, the boys State basketball tournament tipped off in first round action.

Defending State champion Punahou may have had to play-in to make it to the tournament, but they showed they're a force to reckon with. With a spread out offensive attack, the Buffanblu beat Campbell 51-32. Punahou advances to a quarterfinal matchup against OIA Red Champion Kahuku tomorrow at 7pm at Radford High School.

In the early game at Radford, Iolani used consistency to get past Lahainaluna 60-50. The Raiders scored at least 12 points in each quarter to post the victory. Kainoa Chu led Iolani to the win with 17 points and three rebounds. Iolani takes on #3 Waiakea at 5pm at Radford.

The Kalaheo Mustangs ran wild on the Radford Rams in their first round contest. Kalaheo, led by forward Matt Gasparine-Young, shot almost 50 percent in the game, while holding Radford to under 30 percent shooting. Kalaheo will face top ranked Kamehameha Kapalama tomorrow at McKinley High School, tip off is set for 7pm.

And in the final quarterfinal game, it's Kaimuki and #4 Baldwin. Kaimuki defeated Keaau 76-60. It was a tight game throughout, but in the 4th quarter, the Bulldogs left the Cougars in the dust. Kaimuki outscored Keaau 31-13, getting the win by a final score of 76-60. The Baldwin Kaimuki game is slated to start at 5pm at McKinley.
