HONOLULU (KHNL) - Being ranked number one doesn't guarantee a thing. Just ask the Punahou girls basketball team, who despite being ranked number one, finished runner up in last week's girls state basketball tournament.
This week, it's the boys turn, and it's Kamehameha who finds themselves with the target on their back. The warriors won the ILH this year , earning the top seed and a first round bye in the state tournament. However, the last time they were number one, 1992, when Kamehameha won their last state title.
"We battled all year, we feel like we're the number one seed and it's a great thing since it hasn't happened for 17 years, we're really looking forward to it, the state tournament, we're not looking past any team and we can only take a team one game at a time and hope for the best," said senior guard Pii Minns.
The tourney tips off on Wednesday, with the championship set for Saturday. The Warriors will play the winner of the Kalaheo - Radford game in Thursday's quarterfinal matchup.
