KANEOHE (KHNL) - While many around the state are still getting rid of their Christmas trees, one person manages to make a "presidential" discovery while working at a landscaping company.

Travis Putnam wanted so badly to get his hands on something President Barack Obama touched.

And while Obama and his family vacationed last month in Kailua, putnam says he got lucky. He got his hands on Obama's Christmas tree. But from the start, his wife didn't feel it was anything special.

"At first, she thought it was kind of strange, like, why would you bring this home and then I explained some cool ideas to her, she's like that could be fun, good Christmas presents to people next year," Putnam said.

Putnam is employed by a landscaping company who worked on the property the Obamas were staying at. he didn't get the clearance to go near the home until after a co-worker hurt his back.

"I hope if he saw it, he would've done the same thing and taken it and I plan on giving him something," he said. "I'd given him a magazine to sign for me but it didn't happen, but this is pretty cool to me."

After seeing the tree sit outside Obama's vacation home, he asked a housekeeper if he could take it and the rest is history.

"I got a lot of suggestions from family," he said. "I think i'm just going to dry it out, cut the branches off, cut a bunch of little sections out and make coasters. If anyone has ideas, I'd like to hear from them."

Putnam says some people have told him to sell the tree or parts of it on eBay, but he's not interested in doing that.
