WAHIAWA (KHNL) - We're less than a week into 2009 and Oahu already has recorded its fifth traffic fatality of the year.

An autopsy on Wednesday found Daniel Shelton, 29, died from multiple internal injuries sustained in a crash in Wahiawa Tuesday night. The Medical Examiner is awaiting test results to see how much alcohol, if any, was in his system.

Gloria Myers places a bright yellow flower at the site of Oahu's latest tragedy.

"This is just to pay tribute," the Wahiawa resident said.

Daniel Shelton was driving on California Avenue, when he crashed his car into a guardrail near Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. Investigators say speed and alcohol may have been involved.

"We heard what we thought was something that hit a dumpster because there were a lot of bottles," Myers, who lives near the crash site, said. "Right after we heard the last rollover, we heard a woman screaming."

Shelton died at the scene. His passengers, identified as Kaleo Giron, 28, and Henry Jesus, 24, were injured.

"My heart goes out to the families," Myers said through tears. "I have a 22-year-old and a 26-year-old boy."

A section of the guardrail broke off and fell onto the road, damaging two other vehicles. Police say no one else was hurt.

Another makeshift memorial comes together. Five people died on Oahu's roadways in the first six days of 2009.

"I mean, I don't know," Myers said about the number of deadly crashes. "I mean, I believe that when the Lord's ready to take you, He's going to take you."

Oahu is ahead of last year's pace when it comes to traffic fatalities. During the same period in 2008, there were two.
