WAIKELE (KHNL) - The holiday shopping season will soon come to an end. And when the sales stop, some island businesses will be shutting their doors.

The slowing economy is forcing many businesses to slash already reduced prices on products. It's a bonanza for buyers but it also means final sales for some stores.

Christmas has come and gone, but the holiday sales are still going strong.

50, 60, even 70 percent off.

Because shoppers have turned into bargain hunters during these tighter economic times.

"I'm not buying unless its at least 75 percent off," said Mililani resident Ann Timbreza.

"Everybody's been shopping for bargains this year looking for the best bargains possible," said Shelly Simpliciano, manager for Local Motion.

Island stores like Local Motion have continued to keep up sales by cutting the cost of some of their most popular items. But for other stores the recession has them reeling.

At Waikele Premium Outlets the impact of the nation's slowing economy can be seen. A number of local businesses of mainland brands are forced to shut their doors.

Big Dog Sportswear is one of casualties.

But before they close for good, this Oahu store slashed their prices.

"Everything went to 10 dollars or less. Our t-shirts were 10 bucks now they are $5.99," said Big Dog manager, Dana Bolos.

Shoppers like Ann Timbreza have taken notice of the sales.

"I'm being kind of picky. If they don't have the deeper sales I'm not buying. Cause I want to save money," said Timbreza, of Mililani.

So even though some island businesses won't survive this shopping season, buyers getting bargains are still spending.

"I'm shopping for next Christmas and everybody's birthday. When you have this kind of sale like now, you save so much you may as well do all your year's shopping," added Timbreza.

Many stores are also extending their holiday shopping sales longer, in order to keep customers coming in.
