'Tis The Season

We all need some respite from the storm... daily reminders of failing companies, government bailouts, and people's lives impacted in big ways.  This week, this holiday season, what can't be shared by material means can certainly be shared by good fellowship, good cheer, and common kindness.

Everyone seems too busy, too pre-occupied, too rushed, too put upon.  But that doesn't mean we need to check our civility at the door.  Nowhere are people kinder and more empathetic than right here in these islands.  Nowhere do people step up through the intricate local styles of calabash cousins, hanai families, and the spirit of lokahi as we do here in Hawaii.  Some people struggle through the holiday season even when things are going pretty well around them, so now, more than ever, let's make sure we all do our share to be empathetic, to hug those who are grieving from loss of any kind, to listen to people who are struggling or filled with anxiety.

Giving this gift of sincere humanity is really what this season is all about, as it was intended to be, before some of the blatant commerciality and automotive traffic took over.  When you say "merry Christmas", mean it.  When you wish someone a "happy new year", do whatever you can to make it happy... throughout the whole year.  If we all mean it and then actually hold ourselves accountable, what a wonderful world it would be.  Happy holidays; think about it...
