Makaha Beach remains closed after shark sighting

Posted: Updated:

MAKAHA (KHNL) - At approximately 10:00 AM Tuesday, Honolulu City and County lifeguards spotted an 8-10 foot shark in waters off Makaha Beach on the leeward side of Oahu.

Since that time, officials continue to witness shark activity in the area and decided Wednesday morning to close the beach for a second day in a row.

In addition, due to the extensive amount of debris, runoff and possible leptospirosis exposure at Makaha Beach lifeguards are advising people to stay out of the water.

Storm runoff from recent heavy rains has muddied ocean waters creating conditions which are known to increase the presence of sharks in near shore waters.
