EWA BEACH (KHNL) - Ewa Elementary School ends the day on a high note, as a generous donation gives its music program a big boost.

Island entertainer John Cruz treated the elementary students to a concert that featured Hawaii favorites and songs of the holiday season.

And while many enjoyed the music, classes and students will be enjoy the gift of 30 new ukuleles for years to come.

The gift will also reach more than just students taking music at Ewa Elementary.

"Part of our curriculum is Hawaiian and using the instruments in that kind of integrated music lesson where Hawaiian history, culture and social significance is covered," said Ewa music teacher Nolan Santa Ana. "The ukulele is a big part of that and having new instruments makes the whole experience so much better for the kids."

The Tangi Ukuleles come from Sprint Hawaii and the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation in an effort to promote Hawaiian music education.

By the end of this year, Ewa will be just one of eight schools to receive donations of instruments for this cause.
