HONOLULU (KHNL) - One of Hawaii's natural stone companies finds a unique way to help protect the environment. It replaces its gas-powered vehicles with a fleet of electric cars.

Bella Pietra recently added a third electric car to its fleet of environmentally-friendly vehicles. This latest one is the first electric pick-up truck in Hawaii.

It's cute.

It's practical.

But most of all, it's environmentally- friendly.

This hot new set of wheels is the latest addition to a fleet of electric cars at Bella Pietra. The company acquired the first car, two years ago and since then, has added two more.

"Electric vehicles just makes sense because so many of our clients are downtown and close to the hub, instead of having to get a company vehicle the electric cars are small, easy to drive," said Bella Pietra owner and CEO Layla Dedrick.

Aside from saving gas and the environment, there's one more advantage to driving these cars.

"It's free street parking downtown," said Dedrick.

These environmentally-friendly cars can drive up to 30 miles-an-hour and last about six hours on the road. They're used on a daily basis to deliver products to clients downtown.

The cars are quickly gaining popularity on the road and draw attention wherever they go.

"We deck out in our company color and our logo and so people always, they stop and ask about them," said Dedrick.  "It's not that hard to just make a little change and make a difference to the environment."

For Bella Pietra, that little change starts with these electric cars.

The cars are custom-made right here in Hawaii. They cost about $3,500 to $6,000 each.
