H-1 Freeway Kapolei Interchange Complex contract awarded

KAPOLEI (KHNL) - The first phase of the Kapolei Interchange Complex, connecting ramps to the Makakilo and Palailai Interchanges, has been awarded to Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company for its winning bid of $16,604,000.

Bids for Phase 1 opened on August 28 with submissions ranging from $16,604,000 to $22,294,350.

Construction of the Kapolei Interchange Complex will be a multi-phase project aimed at easing traffic in Kapolei.

Phase 1 of the project consists of a new eastbound H-1 Freeway on- and off-ramp for the new Kapolei Interchange at Kamokila Blvd. and Wakea St., as well as a new westbound freeway off-ramp near Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.

The new westbound on-ramp at the Makakilo Interchange will also provide motorists with access to the H-1 Freeway from Makakilo Drive.

Groundbreaking is expected to begin early 2009 and Phase 1 is anticipated to be complete in fall 2010.
