KALIHI (KHNL) - Honolulu police barricade a man inside a Kalihi business Friday morning after he was served an eviction notice.

Police say the 63-year-old threatened to kill himself. That's when they closed down the street and cornered him with multiple officers and armored vehicles.

Officers say they had reason to believe the man had guns in his possession.

Crisis negotiators talked the man into surrendering peacefully at around noon, about a couple hours after it started.

"Public safety is always our utmost concern and anytime somebody in a business or residential area like this where there are so many people, we need to make sure that the community is safe," said Captain Frank Fujii of the Honolulu Police Department.

The man was taken to the hospital for mental evaluation.

Police say they didn't find any guns on him.

No one else was with him in the building.
