HALEIWA (KHNL) - In a special "Toughing It Out" report, we showed you the struggles of a homeless family on Oahu's North Shore.

Since the story aired, there's been an outpour of support from families, businesses and communities; all stepping up to lend them a helping hand.

The family says they've been overwhelmed by generosity. They say along with people's hearts, their eyes are also opening to what's reality for Hawaii's homeless.

Countless No's. Unanswered pleas for help. Mary Jane and her fiance Frank were almost out of hope, until a stranger startled them.

"I was shocked when they drove up they go this is for him," said Frank Smith.

It was North Shore AC Services with a brand new generator Frank so desperately needed to power a machine that helps him deal with his sleep apnea. After seeing the struggles of good homeless families just trying to survive, our viewers stepped up.

"Guarantee, we would have never got it and these people would never know that there are people out there that need help," said Mary Jane Ponce.

Families, military and businesses are dropping off hot meals, groceries, and a number of other goods.

"That's what Hawaii's about, it's about not only yourself but about Ohana," said Ulu Luna.

"They always had a heart, they just didn't know the situation of a lot of families out here," said Ponce.

"I just want to say to all those people from my heart, thank you. Thank you," said Smith.

Thanks to the random acts of kindness, Frank can finally get some rest.
