Lanai brushfire still burning

LANAI (KHNL) - Fire officials are mopping up a brushfire on Lanai.

The fire, which began Tuesday at about noon, has burned an estimated 1,000 acres and forced the evacuation of nearby homes and 600 employees and guests of the Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay.

Fire and police officials allowed evacuees to return to the resort and their homes late Wednesday afternoon.

Two helicopters returned to the scene to conduct water drops Wednesday morning. Nine fire fighters from Maui were dispatched to assist the five Lanai personnel. Maui fire fighters remain on scene.

No structures have been burned and no injuries are reported.

Heavy smoke created difficult conditions for evacuees but no medical attention was reported necessary.

Conditions remain windy and the fire is not yet considered contained.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
