Windy weather wreaks havoc

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Fierce winds cause a towering coconut tree to fall on a car near the Iolani Palace Tuesday afternoon. One man is injured and sent to the hospital.

The car was moving when the tree fell on it. As you can see, the windshield is damaged. The driver was listed in stable condition.

Debris from the accident blocked three lanes until 2:30 in the afternoon.  Officials believe the tree fell due to high winds.

A much larger tree came crashing down along the Pali Highway.

Fortunately it was well away from the highway itself, and no cars or people were in any danger.

As you can see the new chain link fence was no match for the giant tree, that crushed the fence.

Work crews have already cut the tree into sections to haul it away.

On Young Street, the Honolulu Fire Department were called in to secure part of the roof of a three story building that was peeled off.

There were no injuries.

The area was closed off until all the debris was cleaned up.

The rest of the roof appeared safely intact.

On Lanai, strong trade winds fuel a wild brush fire burning a mile away from the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay.

It began at about 12:15, near Palawai Basin.

As a precaution, the Maui County Fire Department evacuated about 600 guests and staff to Manele Bay Harbor.

A resort official said, all guests and staff are now safely back on the property.
