Traffic counts begin on the Big Island

HILO, Big Island (KHNL) - Hawaii County's Traffic division began traffic counts at Kanoelehua in south Hilo Tuesday and will continue in Puna later this week.

Starting December 1,  traffic counts will begin in Waimea and Waikoloa. Traffic counts are part of a two-year program to optimize traffic signals and eventually create "green-light" corridors to move traffic smoothly during peak times.

Crews with cameras are recording the number of cars, driving behaviors, bikers, and pedestrians at intersections every other week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Traffic counts are the first of four phases in this $500,000 project.

Once the program is complete, a Public Works Web site will inform motorists where and when green-light corridors are in operation.
