NORTH SHORE (KHNL) - With the start of the north shore's competitive surf season, retailers look forward to a boost in their business.

Here on the south shore, the waves are small but larger waves are headed for the north shore.

Perfect timing for the first jewel of the Triple Crown of Surfing. Retailers hope big waves translate in to big sales.

Every year, the Triple Crown of Surfing has a huge impact on the north shore's economy. Even during these tough times. The contest director believes this year will be no different.

"The Triple Crown over the 6-week period in November and December brings in approximately $9 million in direct spending and about $14 million in ancillary spending," said contest director Randy Rarick.

This is good news for Matsumotos, the iconic north shore market famous for its shave ice.

"For me it's been a 5% drop in business so with the Triple Crown, it's going to help us a lot," said Stanley Matsumoto, north shore retailer.

Patrick Duffy works in the tourism industry in Florida and is happy to help out when he visits Hawaii.

"It feels good to support the locals because we know what it's like back where we're from," said Duffy.

Thousands are expected to watch the exciting action in the water over the next few weeks. For people who miss the Triple Crown, there will still be a chance to help out Hawaii's economy.

"They're always happy we have the actual products contest products in the store, so customers are always able to pick it up even if the contest isn't on," said L.G. Shaw, north shore retailer.

It's the unofficial kick-off to the winter surf season. North shore retailers hope it will kick-start the economy here.

Members of the surf industry, including professional surfers, will help by spending thousands each month to rent beach-side homes.
