Hawaii honors heroes on Veteran's Day

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Governor Linda Lingle asks everyone to thank soldiers, sailors, airmen and guardsmen for their sacrifices.

This Federal and State holiday celebrates the signing of the first armistice, that ended World War one.

In 1954, Congress amended the act that made this Veteran's day a legal holiday, replacing "armistice" with "veterans."

Events are scheduled throughout the islands.

On Oahu, there is a service at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

Thirty-five veterans groups are presenting wreaths.

There is also a rifle salute and an F-15 flyover by the Hawaii Air National Guard.
