OAHU (KHNL) - It's a sign we're tiptoeing on the edge of a recession - gas prices, dropping and fast. In this 'Toughing It Out' report, KHNL News 8 finds some of the cheapest places to fill up.

On Oahu, there are gas stations selling below the $3.00 mark. And, believe it or not, they're not Costco.

Competition has neighboring gas stations in Kailua along Kailua Road and Oneawa Street engaging in a friendly price war. They're selling gas for $2.99. That's a price buster for Oahu drivers, who still pay several cents above the $3.00 mark in most parts of the island.

"Finally. I mean, it's nice that it's finally broken that $3.00 barrier," said John Vallero, a motorist.

"Now I have a better choice in gas. I don't have to go to Costco all the time," said Tom Morita, a motorist.

AAA Hawaii says this is the 6th week the Aloha State has seen a double-digit drop in gas prices.

For a gallon of regular unleaded, the current state average is $3.26. That's $.92 cents cheaper than last month.

Costco still holds the cheap gas title , with lines snaking out to the street, and tying up traffic. Drivers at the Iwilei Costco said the wait is between 15 to 20 minutes.

But at $2.51 for a gallon of regular unleaded, the drivers say they don't mind the wait.

"I probably save about $.60 a gallon and with this thing, it takes over 20 gallons, so it's worth it," said one Costco member.

"It's a funny economy. Sometimes we drive a lot of miles just to save a few pennies," said another Costco customer.

For those who can't afford to wait, with a little bargain shopping, drivers can find gas prices that can help them tough it out.

In Hawaii Kai, where prices are typically higher, gas is actually under $3.00.

The cheapest we know of is the 76 Station at Koko Marina, where it costs $2.98 to fill up.

AAA Hawaii says the last time Oahu's gas prices plunged below $3.00 was April of 2007.
