City rolls out island-wide curbside recycling

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Starting Monday, November 3, the City will implement the first of four phases of its island-wide curbside recycling program.

Nearly 40,000 homes on the North Shore (Mokuleia to Sunset) and in East Honolulu (Kuliouou to Mano, Kapahulu) and Kailua (including Lanikai) join Miliani and Hawaii Kai in the automated pickup of refuse, recyclables and green waste.

Current collection days remain the same for most households but there will be a change in collection days for a few neighborhoods .

A two-month transition period allows residents to adjust to the new system.  Twice-weekly refuse collection continues along with the added recycling pickup.  This gives residents time to get used to sorting recyclable material into the blue and green carts and to determine if additional carts are needed.

The second refuse pickup will be eliminated beginning the week of January 12, 2009.  Refuse will be collected once per week and recycling will be collected once per week, alternating weekly between mixed recyclables (blue cart) and green waste (green cart).
