HONOLULU (KHNL) - The moped rider killed in an early-morning crash near the University of Hawaii Manoa campus has been identified.
The crash happened on Dole Street near Frank Street at about 3:30 Tuesday morning.
Police say Rendell Okimoto-Allen, 22, of Honolulu may have been speeding, when he lost control of his moped and hit a curb. They say the moped appears to have been modified to travel faster.
"A lot of times, they fail to modify other parts of it, like the braking and suspension, and it won't be able to keep up with the horsepower that you generate," Lt. Darren Izumo, Honolulu Police Department, said. "In other words, the parameters that these things are designed for, you're exceeding those and then you can't tell what will happen."
Investigators say Okimoto-Allen was not wearing a helmet.
