Makua Beach gates closed for removal of grounded boat

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The State will close the Makua State Park Beach gates Friday to allow the removal of a boat that went aground on the beach near the Makua section of Kaena Point State Park last Tuesday.

The gates will be closed until the boat is removed and any debris is cleaned up.

Laura H. Thielen, chairperson of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, says since the owner has unable to take responsibility for removing the vessel, the State has assumed control of the boat and will clear it from the beach.

The plan is for a tug to pull the rigged boat out to sea and on the high tide.

All fuel, oil and batteries were removed by the Coast Guard.
