Matson makes third consecutive decrease in fuel surcharge

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Matson is lowering its fuel surcharge for the third consecutive time in the past month.

Due to rapid declines in fuel prices, the company is lowering its fuel surcharge by 6 percentage points for its Hawaii service, from 33% to 27% starting October 19.

It is also lowering its Guam and Micronesia service by 6 percentage points to 28.5%.

"Following an extended period in which oil costs hit historical record highs, it is encouraging to see this downward trend continue to be reflected in the prices the company is now paying for bunker fuel," said Dave Hoppes, senior vice president, ocean services.

For most customers, this represents a decrease in shipping costs ranging from $140 to $220 per container.
