Bridge trash, carcasses still there

MAKAHA (KHNL) - Some people in Makaha say the mess under two bridges is still there despite promises it would be cleaned up Wednesday.

After months of complaints about this trashy area, Denise Saylors thought Wednesday would be the day it would all disappear.

But it's still there even after department of transportation crews told her it would be cleaned up Wednesday.

"It's just as filthy, dirty as it was Tuesday," she said. "This bridge that we're at, the pig heads, the pig carcasses and the pig hides are still here."

Saylors, who first brought this to our attention, says she can't understand why crews would clean up one side of this bridge, but not the other.

"My response would be, when someone tells me it's their responsibility, I expect them to live up to their responsibility, if they're 100 percent sure it's their responsibility, then take care of it," she said.

And it's not just because this is an eye-sore, Saylors wants something done now because it's a health hazard.

"I am tired of hearing not my job," she said. "I hear that way too often and i don't find it acceptable."

The DOT says they aren't responsible for cleaning up the pig heads and carcasses.

If it takes a community-wide effort to clean the area, Saylors says she'll take the lead.

"I'm not going away till we get this cleaned up, it's too important," she said.

The DOT says it'll work with the private landowner to get rid of the animal carcasses, and that crews will return to the area to finish cleaning it up hopefully by the end of the week.
