Visitor drowns on Kauai's north shore

KALALAU, Kauai (KHNL) - A 25-year-old visitor from Poland drowned Monday morning while swimming at Hanakapiai Beach.

According to witnesses, the man hiked to Hanakapiai Valley and decided to jump in the water.

Within minutes, he was overcome by the strong current and was swept out to sea.

A witness hiked out and notified lifeguards at Kee Beach at about 11:56 a.m.

Air-one with three rescue specialists on board was dispatched to the scene.

Rescue crews located the victim about 150 to 200 yards from Hanakapiai Beach.

He was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This is the fourth drowning in two days on Kauai.

On Sunday, two women died in the waters at Queen's Bath in Princeville and a man died after snorkeling off a beach in Kapaa.
