Matson decreases fuel surcharge

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Matson is lowering its fuel surcharge because of recent declining fuel prices.

Starting October 12, the surcharge for its Hawaii service will be decreased by 4.5 percentage points, from 37.5 to 33.0 percent.  The surcharge for its Guam and Micronesia service will also be lowered by 4.5 percentage points to 34.5 percent.

This is the second decrease in its fuel surcharge in less than a month.

Matson senior vice president Dave Hoppes says while the company usually gives 30 days notice of rate adjustments, Matson has decided to pass it to customers sooner so they can quickly gain the benefits during this difficult economic environment.

For most customers, the decrease in shipping costs range from $110 to $170 per container.
