HONOLULU (KHNL) - In this Earth and Sea Report, we find out how children can play a role in going green and we tell you the five simple steps you can take, to help the next generation, be eco-conscious.
Julie Yang is a busy mom. Caring for three-year-old Noah and seven-month-old Natalie.
At the same time she is trying to teach her family how easy it is to save the environment. Right down to reheating meals.
"If you buy glass containers like this that you can store things in you can reuse it, the great thing is it goes in the microwave, it goes in the oven, it goes in the dishwasher, the refrigerator so you can use it over and over again," said Yang.
By avoiding disposable plastic and other items, it creates less stress on our land fills. Another simple change is to reduce the amount of meat we eat.
"To produce a pound of meat it takes 2,500 gallons of water for wheat it only take 25 gallons of water."
You may have seen these when you enter your favorite supermarket. Yang says this will also reduce the amount of waste.
"It's good to know that this is actually catching on that it's becoming a trend when you go shopping you just have it in your and take it with you when you go shopping."
"Another way you can have your child be more eco conscious is to assign them the task to turn off lights, so deputize them to be the light officer if you will."
There's also a Web site called savvysource.com, an online resource for parents and children who are in preschool. You will find more information on preschool activities along with tips on how to enrich their lives.
Another easy and eco-friendly tip?
You can also teach your child to recycle paper, plastic and aluminum cans.
