WAIKIKI (KHNL) - The slowdown in tourism has hit Hawaii hard, especially for those who depend on visitor dollars. But local people can help out the economy and save themselves a few bucks in the process of having fun.

When local people think of Waikiki, the first thing that pops in their head is probably tourists. But if you enjoy the ocean, there are some great deals at many Waikiki beach vendors.

Surfers do what they do best in Waikiki.  Among those enjoying the ocean is Jeff Ware, who is visiting Hawaii on a two-month work trip.

"The sets were few and far between. They're fairly ride-able and it's a lot of fun out there," said Ware, who is from Virginia Beach, Virginia. "Got to meet some of the local people and some of the tourists hanging out and waiting for different waves.  It was a lot of fun."

But these days, folks like Ware are few and far between. Ask Ron Galindo, who operates Beach Boy Hale at the Waikiki Shores.

"Business has been down a lot at least 20 percent for my company," said Galindo, who is from Makaha. "It's been almost like a ghost town around here."

So Galindo's offering discounts to attract local customers.   You can rent surfboards for $50 a month.

"It's a convenience," said Galindo. "People don't have to bring their surfboard down to Waikiki. So the monthly pass kind of helps them out a lot."

You can even rent paddle boards by the month. Something like this goes for 75 bucks a month.

Ware says he hopes the discounts work so these places are still around the next time he comes back to Hawaii.

"I grew up around the beach on the East Coast of the mainland, and it's wonderful out there," he said. "But I guess, it's nothing like being in Hawaii though."

Waikiki businesses looking for ways to keep their head above water.

And to sweeten the deal, they're also offering 10 percent off beach rentals with a valid Hawaii ID.
