Board of Education considers deeper cuts

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Deeper cuts totaling more than $46 million, on the table now for the State Board of Education to consider.

The Department of Education is recommending additional cutbacks of $14.5 million from its original recommendation a week ago.

This proposal would eliminate 244 full time equivalent positions from state schools.

Major additional cuts included 3.2 million in staff reductions. 5.1 million in substitute costs and 6.4 million dollars in benefits for eliminated positions.

The proposed cuts total more than 15% of the current years budget.

The Board's Budget Committee will discuss the latest cuts at McKinley High School next Monday at 3:00 PM.
