WAIALUA (KHNL) - Studies show children learn more with music. With that in mind, a Waialua Elementary School teacher created a program that teaches students everything from phonics to science through music.

She's a musician turned teacher who uses her talent to teach young minds exactly what they need to learn.

Whenever Jennifer Fixman wants to get her first graders motivated about learning, she pops out a CD.

But not just any CD.

It's from a series she's created, called Edutunes.

"It's a great break during the day and it's a great way to release that energy so they can really focus when they're doing academic activities," said Fixman.

Jennifer, who goes by the stage name, "Miss Jenny," has written more than 200 songs and compiled them into eight CD book sets.

They teach students in preschool through 6th grade, all subjects including math, reading, writing and science.

Her music program is used in schools throughout the nation.

And here in Hawaii, her students really enjoy it.

"Every single CD is wonderful, I like them," said 7-year-old Shawn Martin.

"I think all Miss Jenny's songs, they're really great," said 6-year-old Janai Medrano.

As the magic of music sparks enthusiasm in children, Jennifer says it makes learning, all the more fun.

"I love seeing them learning," said Fixman.  "The children learn more, they remember more and they love learning for music."

Miss Jenny will be doing a book signing for "Education Appreciation Weekend," at Borders in Windward Mall, this Friday from 6 to 7 PM and also at Borders in the Waikele Shopping Center, Saturday from noon to one.
