A volunteer opportunity on Maui's highest peak

HALEAKALA, Maui (KHNL) - Caring for public lands in Maui is a theme that extends all the way to the top of Mount Haleakala. This year the Haleakala National Park is celebrating its 75th annual National Public Lands Day.

The event originated 75 years ago with volunteers from the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937.

On this National Day the park will be free and open to the public Saturday, September 27_28.

In an effort to protect the native ecosystem volunteers are invited to join Haleakala National Park, the Pacific Whale Foundation and the Friends of Haleakala in removing invasive weeds and trash.

Volunteers will be meeting at the summit parking lot on Saturday, Septmeber 27th at 9:30am.

Organizers suggest volunteers be prepared to get wet and dirty, pulling weeds while enjoying spectacular views from 9,700 feet.

Following the clean-up, lunch will be served at Hosmer Grove.

Those interested in extending their volunteer services further can also sign up for a two-night wilderness experience on the top of Haleakala, at Kapalaoa Cabin from Saturday, September 27 - Monday, September 29th.

Spaces are limited.  Call (808) 248-7660 to sign up.
