HONOLULU (KHNL) - The Honolulu Police Department uses about 133,000 gallons of gas in its vehicles each month. Next week, it will launch a pilot project aimed at reducing that figure.

The department bought six Toyota Camry hybrids, which will be used for patrol duties across Oahu. Police say the car averages 33 miles per gallon of gas.

The purpose of the pilot program is to test how well the vehicles perform in police work.
