RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (KHNL) - Professional surfer, Melanie Bartels ripped it up at Barra da Tijuca, Wednesday. Catching four foot barrels the Hawaii surfer took first place in the Billabong Girls Pro Rio surf contest in Brazil.
Defeating finalist Sofia Mulabnovich, 25 from Peru, Bartels, 26 now shoots up from 14th place to 6th place in the 2008 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women's World Tour.
Some are calling Bartels performance in the semi finals against reigning champion Stephanie Gilmore, 20 from Australia as the best women's surfing performance in ASP history.
The ASP Women's World Tour will now continue on to the Beachley Classic in Sydney, Australia from October 9-14, 2008.
