Beaches reopen after shark sightings

KOHALA, Big Island (KHNL) - Big Island beach parks along the Kohala Coast have reopened Friday after being closed yesterday due to sightings of large sharks in waters just offshore.

According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Public Information Specialist, Deborah Ward, Waialea Bay, Hapuna Beach Park, and Spencer Beach Park have all reopened, although signs of shark sightings remain posted.

15-20 sharks were reported Friday, sighted in waters just north of Spencer Beach Park near Kawaihae Boat Harbor but the beach park remains open.

The DLNR urges the public to be take note of any precautionary measures before entering the water.
