Abercrombie supports restoring funds to federal highway trust fund
U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KHNL) - U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie voted Thursday to restore more than $8 billion in highway-user taxes to the Federal Highway Trust Fund, a move that will prevent a possible 34% cut in federal highway funding in 2009.
Abercrombie says failure to take this action would have cost Hawaii nearly $53 million in funding for highway projects and the loss of 1,800 jobs in Hawaii.
"We learned from the demise of Aloha Airline how devastating that kind of job loss is to our entire community," said Abercrombie.
Hawaii received more than $161 million in federal highway funds this year.
Ten years ago, $8 billion was transferred from the Trust Fund to the U.S. Government's General Fund when it was deemed to have too high a balance.
