HONOLULU (KHNL) - Students at Damien Memorial School honor one of their own, a soldier who died last month.

Students at Damien attend a memorial service for Jonathan Brostrom. A graduate of the school, Jon was killed in Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was just 24 years old.

"He had a lot of fun when he was in highschool. He was always a fun guy, he always liked to put a smile on everyone's face, and I'm sure all of his teachers remember him back in the day from sophomore year all the way to his senior year," Jon's brother Blake said.

Jon's little brother Blake also attended the school.

"All the guys were all great guys they even showed up to our house for his birthday which was August 22nd," Blake said.

"Thank him we shall, and honor him we will, and honor him we must," Damien's Principal, Michael Weaver said.

The school presented his parents with a statue of Father Damien. The school has added an award in Jon's name, it will go to a senior who exemplifies leadership and inspiration.

"John lives. Jon lives at this school, and he lives in our hearts," Weaver said.

"My brother he was probably the bravest, strongest, words can't express the grief I feel after he was gone. But I know my brother pushing forward with everything he's done, it motivates me to do as good as he did when he was a young officer," Blake said.

Blake is in the ROTC program at the University of Hawaii and will graduate in May and will receive his commission as a Second Lieutenant.
