HAWAII KAI (KHNL) - The Hawaii Kai Retirement Community celebrated the birthday of one of it's long time residents!

Gladys Wong turned 100 years-old Tuesday. About 150 of Gladys Wong's friends and family came to wish her a happy birthday.

She arrived at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Community nine years ago. This is where she figured out the secret of living a long and fruitful life.

"You have your family but you must also have your friends," said the birthday girl.

Gladys is still very strong, and hasn't lost her sense of humor, but today the oldest gag in the book was played on the oldest lady in the house.

"They tricked us, they put the candles you can't blow out, so my daughter had to help," said Traci Tong Baracsi, Gladys' granddaughter.

"Without help, I could never blow out those candles," said Gladys.

Gladys grew up in Ewa then moved to Maui. After many years, she and her late husband Joe came back to live at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Community, sharing their aloha spirit with all the residents.

"They became the unofficial ambassadors to all the new people who came here," said Baracsi.

The friends Gladys has made over the past nine years include the staff.

"She's so kind to them," said Baracsi.  "She's always doing something special for them. She remembers them not only through the holidays, but throughout the year."

Celebrating 100 years and looking forward to adding one more candle to the cake.

In November, another resident at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Community will celebrate their 100th birthday.
