Maui firefighters battling brush fire

NORTH KIHEI (KHNL) - The Maui Fire Department is battling a brush fire in the North Kihei area of South Maui.

The blaze was first reported at around 2:30 Monday afternoon.

Authorities say the fire is located along the makai side of the Piilani Highway fronting the Kaonoulu Estates.

The Piilani Highway in South Maui was closed for about two hours between Kaonoulu and Kulanihakoi Streets.

The fire has burned an estimated 4-5 acres and is currently 90% contained.

The fire came within approximately 150 yards of the nearest homes, but no homes were damaged and no evacuations of residents were ordered.

Due to heavy smoke, some residents in the area left voluntarily. No injuries have been reported.

As a precautionary measure, Maui Police instructed construction workers at a nearby site to evacuate; it is unknown if any damage was sustained to the site.

Five fire companies, two tankers and the Air One helicopter are on scene and are being aided by additional water tankers and bulldozers provided by Goodfellow Bros. construction company.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire officials say this fire is not connected with the fire that occurred in Wailea over the weekend.
