HONOLULU (KHNL) - Iolani Palace is now closed to the public after a Native Hawaiian group Friday tried to take over its grounds.
The group's move happened on the statehood holiday, marking Hawaii's admission to the Union on August 21st, 1959.
The group calls themselves the Kingdom of Hawaii Nation.
The executive director of the Friends of Iolani Palace says he witnessed a member of the group physically assault a member of the palace staff.
Kippen de Alba Chu also says the palace will remain closed while officials inspect what sort of damage may have been done to it.
Earlier this year another group, Hawaiian Kingdom Government, also occupied the palace grounds.
