NIU VALLEY (KHNL) - A couple in Niu Valley woke up Thursday morning to a boulder crashing into their house.

"My Dad just called me and he was of course panicked. He woke up at 7:00 in the morning and he heard he said what he described as a ripping sound," the owner's daughter, Tracy Morita said.

A three-foot high boulder fell from the mountain above, bounced over the backyard fence and sideswiped the home.

"I think it came from the very top so it must have picked up a lot of speed by the time it got to the bottom of the hill," Morita said. "Hit the side of the house scraped into it landed there in the concrete and then it kept rolling just because it was going so fast."

It just missed the kitchen where workers were inside remodeling. Tracy's parents have lived in the home for 15 years and were also home.

"I'm just glad that he and my mom are safe. We're trying to assess who owns the property but all we've heard is that it might be a private owner. There's actually two boulders that seem like they are kind of teetering at the top of the mountain," Morita said.

She plans on getting together with her neighbors to see what to do about those.
