First run of Lahaina Villager bus route a success

LAHAINA, Maui (KHNL) - The inaugural run of the Lahaina Villager bus route had a "great turnout" last Friday. They welcomed 16 people on the free, one hour loop through Lahaina Town and surrounding areas.

The Lahaina Villager route number 23 circles through Lahainaluna, Wahikuli and villages of Leialii neighborhoods and continues through Lahaina town from 8 A.M. until 11 P.M.

It connects with the existing County bus service to other areas including Kaanapali, Napili, Maalaea and Wailuku.

The Lahaina Bypass Now encouraged people to ride with the help of West-side senior citizens. They distributed more than 2,000 bus schedules to merchants, senior centers and schools.

May Fujiwara, a member of the LBN, rode the bus on the first day saying, "We caught the bus on Lahainaluna Road and truly enjoyed the ride."

Last year, numerous Lahaina businesses indicated that many Lahaina Town employees live in and around Lahainaluna and Wahikuli neighborhoods and petitioned for a new Lahaina Villager route.
