Coast Guard transports whale carcass to Oahu

BARBERS POINT (KHNL) - Crewmembers with a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point C-130 search plane assisted with an emergency transport operation of a whale carcass from Molokai to Oahu, Monday.

Biologists from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration were called to a beach near Kawela, Molokai, early Monday morning, a few miles east of Kaunakakai.

They found a 15-foot long whale struggling in shallow water.

After a long day in distress, the animal died.

At the request of NOAA, the Coast Guard transported the whale on a C-130 to Oahu for research and to ensure mariner safety.

The aircraft landed at Air Station Barbers Point Monday night and began the offload of the whale.

Scientists plan to conduct a necropsy to learn more about the death.
