Governor Lingle test drives an alternative

DENVER, Col (KHNL) -At the invitation of the U.S. Department of Energy, Governor Linda Lingle is in Denver, Colorado participating in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) preview of alternative fuel vehicles.

Governor Lingle test drove some of the 18 electric cars and trucks.

As a part of the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative the Governor also took part in a regulatory training workshop to learn how to better develop the necessary framework for Hawaii to meet its renewable energy goals.

Both the state and the Department of Energy are working together to move Hawaii towards a cleaner energy future. They hope to have at least 70% of all Hawaii's energy coming from clean energy sources by 2030.

In Colorado the Governor was also joined by U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter in previewing the advanced electric cars and trucks.

The Governor's travel expenses for the two-and-a-half-day trip are being covered by the U.S. Department of Energy. The Governor returns to Honolulu on Saturday.
