WINDWARD OAHU (KHNL)- It's a story you saw first on KHNL News 8.
A mutliated turtle found on the North Shore.
Now the reward to find the sea turtle's killer has grown to more $5,000.
Richard Baccigaluppi tells us his $2,000 he added to the reward total is the least he can do.
It started out as $1,000. Then after we spoke to him on Thursday, it turned into another $1,000.
"Now after visiting the site this morning (Thursday) and seeing the memorial for that turtle, sitting there in the sand in the area that it passed away, I felt well perhaps, just a little bit more might help to get the job done," he said.
So far, it's the highest reward money from one person offered for the killing of "Honey Girl."
"I think it's important to find the person or persons that did this as quickly as possible and try to promote this in every way we can," he said.
North Shore Neighborhood board members raised more than $3,000 as of Thursday afternoon.
They hope more people will come forward and follow them in the pursuit of "Honey Girl's" killer.
"The killing of this innocent defenseless animal prompts the question what needs to be done to stop something like this in the future," Baccigaluppi said.
But he feels the punishment for killing "Honey Girl" should be more than just jail time and a fine.
"They're guilty of murder of an innocent animal and I think along with incarceration, I think we should go about what is it that caused them to do this and try to get them some help," he said.
A helping hand for a beloved animal they so strongly cared for.
North Shore Neighborhood board member Warren Scoville said people have offered reward money from as far away as Canada. To donate, call him at (808) 637-3449. If you have any information about the incident, call (808) 643-DLNR (3567).
