SCHOFIELD BARRACKS (KHNL) - They're actually painted beige and blue.

But being "green" is what's most important about a number of new homes on Oahu.

They're a part of Army Family Housing at Schofield Barracks and they're all energy efficient.

In fact, they've been awarded the gold certification for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design", or "LEED".

Just about everything about the homes are energy efficient - from the kitchen appliances and air conditioning, even down to the toilet.

"We're able to bring the special LEED environmental qualities to a house for an average family rather than just a high end luxury apartment or condo or home which is what's generally happened in the past," said project director Claire Ridding.

Four homes are just about complete.

But the Army expects to built more than 5,000 on Oahu in the next 10 years.
