Local minister accused of sexual assault

HONOLULU (KHNL) - A 56-year-old Oahu man is in jail Wednesday night, accused of repeatedly raping a young girl over a span of eight years.

Wednesday, a grand jury heard testimony about Manuel Taboada.

He is charged with eight counts of sexual assault allegedly beginning in March 1999 when the victim was 12 years old.

Prosecutors say, the suspect was a minister in a compound where several families lived together, including the young victim's family.

"Since the victim was 12 years old, he committed a number of sexual offenses against her, in the house and in the ministry's van, until she was 20 years old," said prosecutor Vicky Kapp. "He told her if she told anyone, the children would be taken away."

Prosecutors add that there have been similar allegations against Taboada in a ministry in Oregon and now an investigation is underway there.

Taboada is currently in custody, with his bail set at $2 million.
