Military exercise off Ewa Beach to involve 100 flares

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The U.S. Navy plans to launch more than 100 flares Wednesday evening from vessels near the Pearl Harbor entrance channel as part of the on-going Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) multi-nation military exercise.

Crew members aboard U.S. Navy Maritime expeditionary boat units will be conducting the pyrotechnics training two miles south of Ewa Beach from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The flares may be visible from shore.

The Coast Guard will broadcast a notice to mariners 30 minutes before the Navy begins and read the broadcast on VHF marine band channel 16 several times during the exercise.

All mariners are advised to use caution when transiting the area.
